Starting the FTP does have potential dangers. They shoot through the roof
if your system is accessible from the outside. If accessible from the
outside you need a good firewall and some exit point programs. Internally,
there is some danger. It needs to be addressed but it's not so severe
that it makes starting the FTP server "bad practice".
Starting the ftp server will start some system jobs. Their system impact
on performance is negligible. You won't notice them. Can other jobs be
initiated? Sure.

Now, that job may be noticeable. ;-)
