Mark/Al, thanks. Firstly, I didnt say I was causing the slowness in the system, its been that way a long time. Sorry if I gave this impression. I am only trying to help them. It's clearly
a lean staff. It was more a question of general tips.
I did google and locate the db2 part but that was a mistake I made not looking for db2 for i.
Buck was kind to steer me on right path. really, I do understand that I come off as not that smart
on as/400. I am just swamped with new projects and trying to learn quickly. I apologize
and will be more careful on this list going forward.

The problem is that you are asking "homework" questions.  They are not
strange or interesting problems that have no information yielded by
google or reference manuals but more basic issues that come from simply
educating yourself or paying for education.  Some of the questions are
borderline and there are a lot of very nice helpful people around here
but I am sure a lot of people are rolling their eyes on each post.

The people who complained that you made the system slow also should be
able to tell you what indexes you aren't hitting and how to fix the
issue.  That's a basic organizational workflow that we deal with often
in our environment handled entirely inhouse without mailing list posts.

You gain a lot more from researching and figuring out the problem
yourself but as long as people are answering your questions feel free,
posting to mailing lists is a lot easier.

Thanks,
Mark

I honestly don't understand what is wrong with having a general discussion about system performance. WHy should I not want to see if I can help the system?  And for those not aware, CR does not update any tables.

The thing I need now is how to connect to the as/400 from the Visual
Studio. In C# we refer to
as 'Connection String'. This also can connect to a stored procedure
or a table or view.
?
I am in touch with IBM via a "PMR" but they have not provided this info.
?
For other databases like SQL Server, this information is readily
available.
?
?Has no one ever done this between Crystal Reports and AS/400?

<sigh>

One gives you the bare bones, one gives you more detail than you're ready
for, the third hits a sweet spot, IMHO.

I realize that you're taking some abuse on this list, but you really could
try just a little bit harder to inform yourself.  It's not hard, I managed
to do it before I was in IT and was using Excel to download data from a
V5R2 box.  Plenty of people have done so using the tools that are
available.

Read will block indefinitely as long as socket is in the correct

half duplex protocol. In other words the socket is no longer "open"
after the readMDT is sent.

ENQ's, ACK's and NAK's are there in Ethernet, IP, TCP communications
as well as TwinAx. The socket protocol hides it all from your
application. You should see them in a WireShark trace.

But that doesn't explain why it's only with one specific customer, and
seems to happen at random.

Everywhere else, it sits there, blocking, without regard to whether the
host is expecting data, and if something happens (i.e., anything I've
tried to induce artificially, including varying off the device from
WRKCFGSTS, ending the connection from WRKTCPSTS, or unplugging the
Ethernet cable), it throws an exception, rather than returning an EOF.

subject: Guested partitions and RCLSTG

I have a hosting partition with two guest partitions.  When I run  RCLSTG
on the host I have to have the NWSD's varied off for the guests.  Is there
a way to do that without killing the guests?
I cannot vary them off right now because I configured them with
PWRCTL(*YES) and they're running their full system save.  If I use
FORCE(*YES) on the vary off I am under the impression that will be quite
disruptive.
