I don't think there's ever been a firmware that was too new for a level of
IBM i. Hardware's another matter.

Rob,
Thank you for your insight and additional links.
Out of curiosity, with current HMC code and Firmware on
Power5/Power5+/Power6, what is theoretical "oldest" OS/400 release that
could be installed. What dictates or controls that ? I assume V5R4 and
later would install under the HMC environment, but "could" you go back
preV5R4 to create a
LPAR running non-supported OS/400 test bed ?

We're running a couple of CR2's which will not.

As soon as you get to HMC change your system to upgrade firmware from
and NOT *OPSYS! Otherwise there is a potential to upgrade your firmwareof
past that which your HMC will support.
I will say that we went from HMC V5 to V7 after I saw the capabilities
V7. Awesome compared to earlier releases. We had to step upgrade
hmc-firmware-hmc-firmware-hmc-... to get there. We were really behind.

HMC Users/Experts,
We are strongly leaning towards implementing a HMC 7310-CR3 running V7.7
(latest code) as it supports Power5, Power6, and Power7.
What are the gotcha's, best practices, and lessons learned that you can
share as we travel this path. I could be highly influenced as we have
commitments in place. It must support existing Power5/6 (V5R4 & V7R1).capable,
The existing machines are LAN console'd and current on Firmware Status
set
to *OPSYS. All that I've read tells me this model is also Power7
so we have future growth options.list
Thanks for sharing.
