I've seen a few different "home grown" replication systems...

It's not as easy as it sounds :)

I'd strongly recommend a commercial package. There are some big name (and
$$) ones along with some small name (and $$) ones.

If you're bound and determined to use home grown, consider starting with an
open source package. There are a few.
