RE: System slow

Everything said so far has been valid. I'll throw in another:

1) What's the largest file on your system?
2) Is it large enough to span all of your disk arms?
3) Was somebody doing a mass delete/update or re-org on it?

In our case it's a file that stores record level changes for a number of
different files in our ERP package. Unfortunately, it uses a VARCHAR
field to store each archive record in a string. The file is also larger
than our entire production environment.
I've learned that we can't delete records or re-org the file without
bogging down all of the disk arms. This makes the user experience
extremely slow. While the job was visible in WRKACTJOB, it had a
disproportionate impact on the user experience relative to the % of CPU it
was taking.

The last time I saw a similar impact was when we deleted an integrated
windows server on our last box that had a sizable portion of disk space
allocated.
