Changing from DDS to DDL is not a means to /modernize/ because the change is unnecessary. Be *very careful* and fully understand the impacts before making such a change [e.g. programs that write invalid decimal data will no longer be FD&H, and they will become unhappy victims].

A proper change is to move applications to use the SQL for SELECT queries and DML, and *then* change database files only when necessary; proper, because then applications that care about level identifiers will [mostly] be gone, and a TABLE or a VIEW can change without impacting existing programs that depend on a specific static record format. And since a past thread indicates IBM refused to correct one of the latest encountered incompatibilities, effecting match RcdFmt Level Identifiers may remain elusive.
