Maybe because they saw the AS/400 as a different system from the S/38.
Moreover, many of the AS/400 initial customer were, in fact, S/36 shops,
which made the distinction more pronounced.
Nevertheless, all this endless discussion about what should be the proper
name is now moot. IBM has taken a decision and we have to live and work
with it (whatever we like it or not).
Regarding IBM, I recently "rediscovered" this old ITJungle article. It
should make Trevor smile:-)
