LOL - I have to admit that this doesn't quite make sense to me - but I've not worked with the POP server before, and very little with the SMTP server.

I'll definitely have to study up - thanks for the info!

Maybe the problem was in trying to "send" emails to the pop server! The
pop server just reads mailboxes on behalf on clients that connect to it.
It doesn't do any message storage. The SMTP server has a component that
will "mailbox" received email. To receive email onto the i you'd have to
fire up the smtp server as well as the pop server. Sorry if that
re-iterates what you already know.

Hi Tim

This isn't exactly on point, but here goes. I was tasked with figuring
out some stuff with POP3 on IBM i - in particular, I was asked whether
we could receive emails on the box. I said yes, knowing about at least
one client.

I ran into hurdles when trying to find a mailbox to read from. We have
Exchange, but I did not know what the POP3 server address was - did not
know whether it was even allowed to access a box internally. Turns out
it was, fortunately.

So I tried to use the POP server on the IBM i. I turned it on and was
able to use the client against it. The main problem was sending emails
TO it. I just didn't have time to work it all out, and these emails were
going to come from customers, hence, outside our walls. I just wanted
something to test against, but it wasn't working out.

The mailbox on IBM i was basically user-profile@system-domain-name -
that's about all I know for sure for now!

I'm not asking here for more information on setting up the POP server -
have no need or interest right now. I don't think most companies would
use IBM i for this, anyhow, just as the native SMTP server is not used
so much - it usually seems a good idea to avoid the native support (and
especially SNDDST) and merely use a relay on Exchange or some other
email server.

True, but there are various options available and some that have been
suggested. Whether you're pulling from the i pop server or exchange
you've the same requirement but several points of failure less.

Yes, that is true. AFAIK, there is no native POP client provided by IBM
- unless I missed it along the way - I'm happy to learn about it.

Exchange supports POP. A pop client on the i can pull messages from
exchange in exactly the same way it would pull from an i based pop
server - only the ip address and account details would be different.

i don't know that the pop SERVER can pull messages from exchange - maybe
exchange can forward them, as you mentioned.

You still need some kind of POP client to receive the messages. I think
I mentioned that we just bought RJS Software's POP/400 package. There is
something free at easy400.net but it doesn't break out attachments.
Along with MMAIL at easy400.net is something else that can read POP3
mailboxes, but it takes a fair amount of setting up, I think.

I know the RJS product, since I used to work there. It is going to do
just fine for us, while there may be other options in addition to those
at easy400.net, but I'm not aware of them.

Tim,

How would you pull the messages from exchange using pop?

But why set up the pop server on the iseries? That just creates another hop. You can pull the messages directly from exchange using pop.

Ken,

I wasn't sure, but thought something like this might be necessary.
Once configured, the POP3 email on the iSeries will only work if the emails are forwarded from Exchange.

Maybe, not sure. I'm confused that if the replies are currently ending up in my Exchange email box, how would it get to the POP3 server.
Remember, the i5 originates the email, but Exchange is sending it.
As I mentioned previously in this discussion, it doesn't matter how the email is going out. As long as the replies are being sent by Message-Media as normal emails, the regular email rules will apply to determine what server to deliver it to.

Once the email hits the Exchange server, you can use a rule to forward it to another email address that includes the i host name. Said rule would need to look for strings in the headers and/or subject and/or body to determine which emails to apply the rule to.

I.e. if your domain were example.com, forward/redirect tosomeemailaddress@xxxxxxxxxxxxx where i.example.com resolves to the IP address of your i system.
