To my knowledge there has been no discussion on chopping off S/36
environment.

At one time IBM wanted, with every fiber of their existence, to chop off
support for the S/36 environment RPG compiler. It got to the point where
IBM announced when support would end for those compilers (V5R4 was
supposed to be the last release to support them). They got the ever
living crap beat out of them and backed away from that. If you don't
think IBM would try something like this think 5250 tax.

I am sure there are those who hope IBM would end support for the S/36
environment so that they could finally migrate those applications.

"Future" plans used to be announced here:

But lately IBM has done a sucky job updating that site. Most of their
"future" is stuff that's already occurred. They used to put stuff in
there like "VxRy will be the last release to support Domino a.b.c. You
should upgrade your Domino in preparation for the next release." And you
could replace the word Domino with Java.
