First, if you're using MAILTOOL Plus with MAILTOOL, then you wouldn't need
to worry if the SMTP servers and MSF servers were up to deliver the mail
since it bypasses all of IBM's SMTP and MSF "stuff".

But our JOBWATCH application can be set up to not only monitor MSGW and
other job states, but it can also be set up to look for specific jobs and
if they are running or not. As well as "at least xx" number of the jobs in
the case of SMTP, MSF or HTTP server jobs.

So you can say "if there aren't xx SMTP jobs with this name running, then
do xxxx". This can call any command, program, etc. This could alert via
QSYSOPR or some other means.

For verification of function, the boss and I are both thinking of
sending a test email as part of the IPL process, after giving TCP, SMTP,
and MSF time to come up, and sending one at a fixed time every day, but
I'm thinking that an alarm is more likely to be noticed than the lack of
a verification.
