A walk in vault would be poor protection from fire as they usually
have ventilation.

And a basic fireproof safe, ie. for paper, won't protect media.

seriously, it had a bank vault door combination and all. The walls were a

AND inside it was your basic fireproof safe; I forget its rating.

Admittedly we never had an incident to test the set-up. And most companies
don't have the motivation (we used the building as a demo) or resources to
go to those lengths.

Any "smoking hole" production site scenario will be painful regardless and
you will eventually have to rebuild all the infrastructure. However if you
have a Prod_VTL replicating to DR_VTL to go along with prod host systems
replicating to DR host systems then the VTL replicated backup data will be
available to the DR systems immediately (except for what was in transit
during the disaster). Your backups would just run from the DR host system
to
the DR_VTL while production is unavailable.

You are right to assume I would argue the time to rebuild a VTL would be
relatively the same as a tape library. Resynchronizing the data from
scratch
would take a while depending on its size and your network bandwidth, but so
would transporting physical media from DR site back to Prod assuming you
had
to "white glove" it through some service.

What happens if your office is Chicago and your offsite VTL is in Denver
and
the office in Chicago (along with the VTL) burns? What's the turn around
time on a new VTL? Of course, you could shove that back on me and say
"about the same time as a new TS3200 tape library".

I would suggest you take a look at a either EMC Data Domain or IBM
Protectier VTL as a substitute for having to frequently deal with physical
media storage challenges. Granted you will need two of them (VTL
appliances) in order to replicate virtual tape pools from one site to
another, so it will initially cost more. In the long run you can eliminate
portable media liability, cost to manage & store tapes, and probably
enhance
your backup throughput depending on what VTL model you purchase.
Oh, and you will definitely achieve 24/7/265 access to backed up data if a
VTL is involved.....without having to pay for "white glove" delivery or FTE
time to fetch a tapes from off-site storage.

Subject: Fireproof cabinets for tape storage

Hi everyone,

I've been asked to research fireproof cabinets for tape and usb/flash drive
storage for our backups.

I did some googling first and found many vendors (of course) and then asked
myself 'what would the wizards on midrange-L use or recommend'?
We are looking to replace our bank safe deposit box and install a new
cabinet onsite and in one of our remote locations, so that in the event of
a
disaster we will have immediate 24x7x365 access to our backups.
For us the cloud isn't an option.

So who are the vendors you'd recommend based on quality, performance and
price?

If you can supply the vendor names, I can do the rest - I'd just like to
weed out those that aren't well know or proven.
