Trevor,

You're not listening to yourself. Look harder.

Gary,

What marketing opportunity am I looking for?

I think the difference is that I think IBM is going to market according to their own plans. No amount of complaining that IBM's marketing does not include IBM i will make them change their approach. Of course, most of the community is not watching when IBM does market IBM i, or they complain that it does not suit their own personal preference. Well, it isn't going to happen any way other than how IBM does it. Calling it internal politics is simply just complaining.

As for SEU, you have already set yourself apart from a lot of the community. When I ask in my sessions who is using RD Power, there are few people. When I ask about SEU, it is an indication of the old in our world
- old name, old tools, old code. Along with old complaints, it is time to stop.

Trevor,

Reread your own posts as if they were written by someone else. Can you
find the marketing opportunity?

As far as SEU goes I still use it at times; not very often but
occasionally. I also use NotePad and the command. IMHO, IBM
jettisoning SEU would be akin to Microsoft jettisoning Notepad or their
command window.

So why did it need the complaining to start the post?

This is where I find we do our platform a huge injustice. Our community
starts with a complaint, and it just goes downhill. Where is all the
passion and positivity that we had when we started here? And how will
we attract the YiPs if all we do is moan, groan and use SEU? And why
would IBM listen to a bunch of complaints?

Gary,

You have an observation. Regardless of the past, IBM have now given us
the IBM i branding. This is cool - it runs all the old crap we built,
all the old stuff that still works for our business, and it even lets
us do new and amazing things. Given that it can do all these things,
complaining is probably the reason why IBM is not listening to us. Our
community tends to post more negative comments and complaints about
our beloved platform than any other community.

Now, what was the point of your observation?

And if IBM hadn't played internal politics and had listened to the
user community i OS would not belong to Apple. Great marketing step
that.

But as you say, if we want to stay with IBM we have to go along with
IBM wanting to brand themselves as a hardware company.

Then again considering how well they listened to us, and Oracle
controlling Java (another great step on IBM's part), maybe moving off
IBM wouldn't be such a bad thing. Sacrilege I know but maybe the
hard truth.

The rebranding is no longer in the equation. IBM have given us the
IBM i branding to match their Power brand, and it will be with us for
the long term.

Either we, as a community, promote the current and future branding,
or we will be left behind in the DP department. And, with all the
noise from the MS crowd (and even Unix people), and some of our own
community, we need to support this incredible platform for the long
term, not its glorious past.
The challenge is to stop using arguments that keep us mired in the
old names and stuck in old ways of doing things.
