Actually Rob, you can run it on a java capable mobile device. It is of course not officially supported, but I have run it on Android before.

I think IBM is drinking the kool-aid that Java is the "write once, run anywhere" solution. And they're hoping to reduce costs by such a thing.
However they're running into user interface issues. And much of iSeries Access is heavily depending on user interface. After all, can you take this new java based version and run it on java capable handheld devices?
No. I am thinking it's a wasted effort to replace the iSeries Access for Windows product. And, what concerns me more, is that they may use it to sunset the iSeries Access for Windows product and iNav's replacement will be the port 2001 product.

Rob

I see your points. Seems IBM is giving us several choices for Access -
the Web-based one has not got much traction, seems to me - no one talks
about it much - maybe it's a silent majority.

The Java-based one just out is giving us the ability to run Access on
multiple platforms - it is not dependent on the Windows OS. Being a tech
preview, your comments can be useful to the developers.

Anyhow, those are some thoughts of an early Friday!

Vern,

Some might argue that anything you have to install on a system, even if
it's carry around on a stick, is not a replacement for a web based
solution. And I'm in their camp. I think of it more of a replacement
for
iSeries Access for Windows with much of the functionality relying upon
whatever the hell the name is for the stuff available at port 2001. (can
we tinyurl that name?)
I'm not really impressed with it and I've been using it for quite some
time.
I am still trying to decide it's "market". Perhaps you hit it with the
carry on a stick consultant.
