I believe the requestor is using PHP on the i already
and wanted to communicate to the DB or an RPG app

Perhaps, but Eric didn't say which platform they were running PHP on. I suspect they are running it on an Intel server because he indicated they were not using Zend.

why write a web service to talk to a web app which are all on
the same side of the wire.  One word: OVERKILL :-)

Actually, PHP on IBM i is its own virtual machine, and so is PASE. It uses sockets to communicate with native IBM i servers. The communication is essentially the same as running PHP on a separate box. However, I still don't get your point.

My point is that call-level interfaces (program and procedure calls), although widely used, don't accommodate all the I/O types that clients need. There are times when you need messaging interfaces instead, whether the client be a browser, or a PHP client. I'm just suggesting JSON streams for message formats. I read that PHP JSON interfaces may be an option.
