Ok, I need to look before I say this stuff. Mochasoft already has the camera barcode scanner feature...

Subject: RE: Replacement for 5250 Emulating Gun Scanners

I've seen Bluetooth enabled scanning devices that would probably work with mobile devices, but if you're using smart phones, why not photo-capture the barcode? I know this won't work with bad lighting conditions, or the need to scan from a distance, so perhaps not right for your situation, but seems to be a low cost alternative to new scanner guns...

I wonder why Mochasoft, or maybe TN5250J, couldn't build a plug-in for the emulation session to perform a photo based barcode scan function an return the value to the 5250 session? Sound like a nice feature, easy to add...

Regardless, if a scanning gun for smartphones / wireless devices is what you want, they're out there.

Note that with smartphone with 5250 emulation, you *could* enlarge the dimensions of your 5250 screen, but I find 5250 emulation to be nearly useless on such tiny screens. Tablet devices give good portability and excellent support for 5250 emulation.

Subject: Replacement for 5250 Emulating Gun Scanners

We use barcode scanning guns with 5250 emulation in the warehouses.
Limitation of 22x15 screen can be frustrating at times.

The guns are aging and before we invent in any more we are considering
if we can get improved functionality and a larger screen with a scanner
plugged in to an iPhone or iPod touch, or some other smart phone.

Is anyone doing 5250 emulation with a scanner on a smart phone or other
similar sized hand held device?

Sam
