Thank you for the information, cost savings basically.

Jack,
Why would you want to backup local system data to a remote VTL if there
was a local VTL available? Perhaps I am missing some context? Why not save
to a local VTL and replicate the tape pool files to a remote VTL? I do this
with our VTLs and it works like a charm. Additionally, the replicated data
has already been "deduplicated" and compressed. This means it's quite
likely a tape that's natively 500GB worth of data might only replicate
deltas that are a fraction of that 100GB.
The closest thing I have seen to long distance backup is TSM or ADSM. We
have used the TSM API to backup limited types of data straight from a
partition in one data center to a TSM server in another, via BRMS of
course. It's slow, but does work long distance because of the TCP/IP
transport. (Obviously you could capture a save file locally and transfer
that to a remote device too)

Subject: Using a VTL (as in remote VTL)
I have some local VTL's defined that I am using, cybernetics and EMC as
an example. Now let(s) say I need to do a backup to a VTL device that is
not local, is anyone doing anything like this?? If so can you explain a)
how and B) how it compares to your local vtl save.
