First it's my understanding that IBM donates a very significant amount of code to Samba, at one time most of the Samba team were IBM employees dedicated to only Samba. Same with Apache. This may be days gone by but I think IBM donates significantly to the Open Source community.

More to the point, If Samba is superior to NetServer and you would like it to run on IBM i, then there are two things to do. First try it. I'm not confident it will work straight away but it's an interesting idea. Tomcat works, why not Samba? Second and more importantly put in a requirement to have it on IBM i. If there is sufficient call for it, I'll bet it gets done.

If Netserver was Samba, perhaps Winbind would be available on iOS too.
I've never understood why there's no Winbind on IOS, technical or
commercial reasons..?
