But this is why the at-sign and dollar-sign probably should not be used
in variable names in RPG - at least, I think that's right. There goes
all that naming of subroutines with the dollar sign at the beginning of
the name!

Actually, RPG doesn't have a problem with that at all ... it doesn't need the field names after it's compiled, it just needs the buffer positions.

If you have to access a database file using JDBC or ODBC, then you're in trouble.
