Do you happen to have iDate, my UDF installed? If yes, it has the
ConvertToiDate that will take a date data type and convert to an
integer which could then be cast to a char field.

select Cast(ConvertToiDate(CURRENT_DATE,'*CCYMD') as Char(8))
from sysibm/sysdummy1
