I think Joe Pluta supplied the answer to the OP's question.
I think Scott brought up a good point in his: If you don't need the GUI
that a PC tool can provide then running grep on the i directly may be the
fastest.

GUI is great, but, if the goal is to then, based on the search results,
process some files, then wouldn't it be best to search with grep and then
pipe the output to a file or process that can then process the search
results and post the data?
