Hi Joel,

Just to make sure you aren't misunderstanding: The number after VARLEN is _not_ the minimum length of the data in the field. Rather, it's the amount of the VARLEN field that's stored in the record buffer (as opposed to storing it in an auxiliary space)

You can still store a zero-length value in that column, even if you have VARLEN(1000).

Make sense?
