What kind of session device error are you getting? Our basic package here
is RPG II. All of the workstations are coded as CP (combined primary),
though in a previous life I always used CD (combined demand). The
difference is that CP always reads a blank record first, for which one has
to code. Whereas with the CD the programmer is in control (EXCPT then read
it at the top of the next cycle).
I haven't converted any RPG II programs to RPG/400, much less RPG IV.
Usually just re-write them if major changes are needed. Otherwise I leave
them alone (I outgrew my masochism).

I've been doing a few of these lately. There isn't too much OCL so it's not
too bad.
I've been leaving the display formats as internally described. If I just
convert the program and fix it up and run it, I get a session device error.
I can fix that by putting a 1P on the output spec of the first screen, but
sometimes I need to grab the LDA first or something similar.
I remember from my old days there was another way to fix that, maybe via a
compile option on the DSPF?
