Luis - just be glad that I am not trying to use Spanish - it would be horrible! You are doing great, I must say.

Vern,

I believe it could exists a little misunderstanding on my part, maybe as a
result of the translation my brain has to do every time I write or read in
English. I see "external apps" as external to the iSeries, hence my VB
assumption (yes, I know what that does :-) ).

Actually, the first SPs I wrote were written in RPG, wrapped with a SQL
interface. Nevertheless, the OP expressed his lack of experience with SP,
thus my suggestion of going a "pure" SQL route. I suggested a SQL function
as another "take" on the subject.

Besides using SQL's Sequence Objects (Rob's suggestion), in our shop we use
"sequence files", just as the OP does, only that they include a "Sequence
ID" field, for using with different apps within the same system (e.g., HR
would have a SQ_HR file, with separate IDs for Employee Number, Department
number, and so on).

I love the lists, and the way they make us think of very
different solutions to a same problem. Nevertheless, I agree that sometimes
it would be nice to have a little more background of the issue at hand.
