<<Why aren't they using their support?>>

Most shops don't have the luxury of having an IT staff. If they have a kid
maintaining their PC's and checking the health of the network once a week,
they're doing more than the usual.

The client to which I referred is one of them. They are a construction
company out in the timber and tobacco region of southeast Georgia. There
might be 30,000 people in the town.

I got involved with them 3 years ago, when they were converting from an S/36
environment package to an iSeries based package. The only reason they made
that switch was because the guy who was supporting their old software kicked
the bucket.

Their new software vendor is getting better at keeping their customers up to
date with IBM, but the production machine and the backup machine both came
from a BP in Iowa.

They only reason they got a backup machine was because they had a close call
with a tornado, and there are no other iSeries machines anywhere around. I
kid you not when I say the backup machine is sitting in a reconditioned
shipping container tied to the ground by cables anchored into concrete
footings.

Shannon,

While you're at this will you contact my mortgage company and ask them why
they charge an arbitrary, and capricious, tax on me if I am late on my
payment?
Will you also contact my auto loan holder and ask them why they charge an
arbitrary, and capricious, tax on me if I am late on my payment?
If you are successful on getting those resolved then I have a host of
others I'd like you to contact.

Or do you believe that those are tangible products you can touch (house
and car) while products of the mind (software, music, movies) should all
be available for free?

Why aren't they using their support? Are they on some testosterone fueled
binge to do everything themselves instead of asking IBM why this and that
isn't working like it's supposed to? Are they ignoring all the stuff IBM
fixes every day with PTFs like security breaches, broken stuff, etc and
not applying these patches? Or are they of the mindset that if I don't
look at the gas gauge then it's really not approaching empty?
