Applying this technology refresh to several lpars. Doing the following:
APYPTF LICPGM(5770999) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES)
repeat for all non lotus and third party products..
I loaded the cume and all 7.1 groups, including the TR, into one image
catalog called CUME. Like 10 discs.
INSPTF LICPGM((*ALL *ONLY)) DEV(OPTVRT01) INSTYP(*DLYALL)
Get that message that MF99004 requires an IPL and the rest can get
stuffed. This was a few days before downtime. Downtime arrives. I do a
bunch of other stuff, RCLSTG, full system saves, etc. Then I fire off the
IPL with a restart. During that IPL I happen to notice that it's
processing the image catalog again! Just saw it again. Right on the
"Operating System IPL in Progress" reference code C900 2967, Activity:
Applying PTFs, I see "Verifying image catalog CUME". Tried to copy and
paste that but the darn thing changed right during my copy attempt.

I am so glad that, even though I order the media on disc's, I load these
all into image catalogs.

After the IPL I now have all the latest groups, cume, etc all comfortably
applied. Got a little time, and I had ran a
CHGIPLA STRPRTWTR(*NO) STRRSTD(*YES)
so I load the image catalog back up and rerun the INSPTF. This time I get
a message that it already has them all and no ptf's were applied. Great.

That first IPL takes about an hour and a half for those PTFs though.
IPL step Time Elapsed Time
Remaining
Internal journal recovery 00:00:01
SAG initialization 00:00:07
PTF processing 00:11:13 00:46:05

and I just noticed this message: "IPL requested by ptf processing" and
it's rebooting itself. IPL screen went blank again.
