I will second this suggestion (and not just because I manage the site). ;)
Using the RPM packages as instructed there will install most of the commonly used libraries automatically. Chances are if you just install gcc, there will be another dependency that is required. These RPM packages load everything you will need in most cases.

I find the AIX RPM packages pretty easy to install.

whereas the GIT wwwinstallgit.sh looks like it installs 4.6.2 from here:
