Instead of doubling or tripling your I/O's by taking your stream file,
slapping it into a qtemp program described file and then processing that
and putting it into your final file why not learn something new that you
will use over and over again? I know that some people keep trying to
avoid new knowledge but I think you've come up with four or five requests
easily in the last month in which someone suggested reading Scott's IFS
tutorial and processing it directly or using the Excel tool set. I have a
coworker who thinks subprocedures, free format RPG, RDP and service
programs are the four horsemen of the apocalypse and even he's reading
stream files directly.
It's:
- faster
- less I/O's than what your dealing with
- more flexible. For example, if some clown sends you a 20 character part
number and your database only accepts 15 you can handle that granularly
- a technique you will use a LOT.
