Chris, Well, binary was simple, and effective!
Scott, As far as getting the CCSIDs right in the first place, again, it's a canned software vendor issue - IBM.
Chuck, Since I was doing it from dos command prompt it didn't like type c; type ascii maybe. Even tried quote type c 1252. That didn't flash any error but the results were gibberish.
Probably a pctech list issue but I'd also like to tell filezilla to use binary for these cases also. How so?

If you do not want to convert, try binary FTP mode.

Subject: ccsid vs ftp
I had some txt files with a ccsid of 819. Some with 37. Some with 1252.
I used ftp in ascii to transfer them down. Only the 1252 were human
readable.
I did a CPY to another directory and gave them a ccsid of 1252. Now they
are all human readable.
Since these are created by vendor software (IBM Lotus Domino) any chance I
can just get ftp to work as I want it to and just make them all human
readable without having to CPY them first?
