Thanks guys, I had already looked at WRKRDBDIRE though and this was not it. The node name is actually generated by the DB2 Control Center but in our case this wasn't happening due to a comms error.
This was resolved with IBM's help, and just as an update for everyone:
We were trying to set up an ODBC connection from a SQL server via a DB2 gateway to an IBM i partition. The DBA was under the impression we needed to create the entry in the DB2 Control Center first (which led to the error we were getting).
Turns out you don't need to do this. We created a catalog of the system on the SQL server using these DB2 commands provided by IBM:
db2 catalog tcpip node wnode remote <sysname> server 446
db2 catalog db mid as wdb at node wnode authentication DCS
db2 catalog dcs db mid as <sysname>
db2 terminate
db2 connect to wdb user <uid> using <pw>
After running these commands the ODBC connection was created successfully.

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows how to find the DB2 node name?
The screen shot below is showing a view from the DB2 control center of two of our IBM i partitions. We are trying to establish a link to a third LPAR but we need to specify the node name (second column below). I have some clues from a Google search that point to something in TCP attributes or a config file in the IFS (I'm guessing here because I sound something relating to a config file on an AIX machine), and I've also been looking at environment variables and the relational database entries, all with no luck.
