That doesn't look correct.
The string 'myemail@xxxxxxxx' in hex would be
'94A885948189937CA385A2A34B839694'

Can you try this statement:

select email, hex(email) as hexemail  from mycontact where email  like
'myemail@xxxxxxxx%'

Then compare the hex values with the regular field values.
