I believe a domain name can be up to 255 characters. According to a
StackOverflow post
(http://stackoverflow.com/questions/386294/maximum-length-of-a-valid-email-id)
the total length of an email is only 254.

In practice, I choose to define my email addresses as varchar(100).
That seems like a realistic balance of length and space.

I have found several articles that discuss the maximum length but I am
not really
sure what is the "correct" number.

Is 256 the maximum length for a typical email address ?
