That's how I recall doing the same thing but we were generating the HP-PCL explicitly. You selected the barcode font and then built the data using a translate table.

I once faced this issue waaayyy back, I recall using a translate table.
Given this value, return that value, processing the input value character
by character and concatenating the result.
