Don't expect EDI data to always conform.

I'll tell a customer that a certain element is required, and they'll say
"everyone else receives it no problem"

So you have to change what you are doing, you know, if you want them as a
customer.

Subject: Re: what is meaning of ** in edi data stream

I see. There is a segment 01, 02, 03, 04 and 06 in a 945 W06. The 05
segment is missing.

thanks,

I have the following line in an EDI 945 document:
W06*N*2469xxxx*20110803*0393838383838**55193838

What does the ** signify in this message line? I assume it means the
field is empty. But the specs I have for the 945 W06 line indicate 5
fields:
N - Pick ticket number - Shipped date - BOL - Customer PO number

There is a null (empty) element between the two asterisks. In your
example, W0601 = "N", W0602 = "2469xxxx... W0605 = "", and W0606 =
"55193838".
