When you say date do you mean a real date data type or just a numeric or
character field with a date in a MDCY format?

If it is a true date field, YEAR will return the year of the date. Remember
the date or time or time stamp is not stored in the format you see. What you
see is simply the formatting that was applied to the internal field for
display. If you are using STRSQL you can do a F13 and change the display
format.

The other possibility is that you just have a numeric or character field
that contains a date in which case you need something like my iDate at
www.think400/downloads.htm to convert to a date that you then use the YEAR
function on. If it is a character field, iDate will normalize the date
before converting to a date data type.

I've got a program that uses dynamic SQL and I'm having a hard time
finding documentation for this, or to find out if it's even possible.

The file contains a date in the format MMDDCCYY. I need to compare
the year entered in a query with the year in the date. At first I
thought I could just substring off characters 5-8, but that won't work
since for example:

Jan 1, 2011

is stored as

112011

So obviously that won't work. :)

Does SQL on the iSeries have a way to convert this type of date to
something and then yank the year out to compare it against a text
literal?

Thanks!
