It's IBM that requires direct access to the underlying file. First they wanted *ALLOBJ, and when we balked at that, they refined their request. I should be more specific: it's the WebSphere folks that want this information; they evidently haven't gotten the memo on the "new" access restrictions.

I think my earlier post explains it Joe. It's so that the user can get to
the underlying data via one of the views in QSYS2, like SYSCOLUMNS.
