Yes, you probably want an intermediary. Otherwise, you are taking on the responsibility of certifying that your site is PCI compliant.

I found it much easier and cheaper to drop our traditional credit-card processor and use Google. They provide JavaScript code that you can integrate into your web site to implement a shopping cart. (I created a dummy item that lets the customer enter an invoice number and fill in the amount.) Google takes care of creating a secure transaction with the customer, emailing you the order/payment, and depositing the funds in your account. If you want to get fancy, they will send you XML that you can use as input to your order-entry or accounting systems.
