The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.
If you know of an easy to use, open source, search engine ... please contact support@midrange.com.
You could go to V5R3. If you decide to, go to V5R3M5 and not V5R3M0.
Might help with your next upgrade.

Since it hasn't been marketed since 2008 you might find it difficult to
get software keys to run it.

Due to the key issue, I wouldn't upgrade, unless you were migrating to
some hardware which supported both V5R3M5 and a newer version of OS and
you wanted a cleaner migration path than not doing it would offer. And,
you could finish the migration within 70 days (before the keys expired).
Are those 8GB drives with about 1.5GB each tied up in RAID striping? Those
can go to V5R3M0 but not V5R3M5. From the Memo To Users at
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/topic/rzahg/rzaq9.pdf
The V5R3 Licensed Internal Code requires more storage space on the load
source than in previous releases. To upgrade to the V5R3M0 Licensed
Internal Code, you must have a load-source disk unit of 4 GB or larger on
each server or logical partition. For optimum performance, at least 8 GB
is recommended. To upgrade to the V5R3M5 LIC (licensed internal code), you
must have a load-source disk unit of 17 GB or larger.
Others can better answer as to whether the 170 can support bigger drives
and what additional hardware may be required to do such a thing.
