Why don't you look into using BIRT or Jasper Reports.
Much easier than hand crafting HTML.

What underlying converter are you using?
We wrote an interface for Flying Saucer, and another for PD4ML. It takes some research and experimentation to discover what may cause a converter to fail, but it get's much easier after you come up with your own templates that work.
