The advantage of using a UDF in your view is you can imbed other stuff in
there like error checking. For example, what do you do if the date is
99999999 or 88888888? Do you return a null value? Did all nines indicate
one unique condition where you should pass a special date as a code (like
Michealangelo's birthday)? And all eights indicate another unique
condition where you should pass a different special date as a code? And,
as much as you may want to pick Elvis' birthday it's probably not a good
idea since it's too recent and may conflict with dates in use by an HR
system or some such thing.
