Yep - I started programming COBOL on a UNIVAC 1108
Submitted the compile deck after desk checking the cards for 2 to 3 hours
Sometimes waited 3 days because of production (this is where you learned to multi-task and work on numerous programs at once)
Then receive the compile listing - ONE compile error
Needless to say the air was quite blue at that time

I never programmed on punch card machines, but was an operator.
At one job, programmers had to submit their compiles on punched cards.
Production always came first, and the operator could wait up to 24 hours to run the compile.
Those guys had to desk check like crazy to make sure there were no syntax or logic errors.
