Jeff,

I install the client software (with service pack) without doing the 
server side and all is well.  This of course assumes your workstations 
do not connect to i as a managed system.

The method in the MTU has been tested by IBM (and therefore is the IBM 
recommended method) for every circumstance that they can think of.

I have connected LAN console with my 64bit Win7 box running V7 i Access 
on it to a V5R4 box (in my office) with no problem so I'm not sure if 
that's why it's recommended.
