Perhaps one of the most sought after requests for V7R1 (or 7.1 if you are
politically correct) was the ability to share the internal tape drive
virtually from partition to partition when doing virtual partitioning (Just
like you can with the DVD). In fact, I think if you are thinking of setting
up virtual partitions this one fix is worth its weight in gold, and a great
reason to move to 7.1.
We loaded the latest 7.1 Hiper PTF Group last week, and I noticed that there
was a new MF PTF in the MF99002 which was supposed to be in the range for
Technology Refresh. So, I asked one of my guys who was creating the CD
image if he had the technology Refresh group in his list of groups he made
for the CD. He said yes, we double checked and he certainly did.
Unfortunately, IBM didn't update the Technology Refresh group PTF, just
released this MF99002 PTF in the Group Hiper once again. This is the second
time in 2 attempts that they have screwed up the delivery of Technology
Refresh PTFs with putting in the Group Hiper before putting them out with
the Technology Refresh Group. With all the "discussion" last time with the
double IPL, PTFs not loading, and the actual PTF installation failing when
installing the Technology Refresh PTFs due to incorporating it into the
Hiper group, you would have thought they would have done it correctly this
time.
While they again get an "F" for the delivery of this new enhancement, the
actual enhancement gets an "A+". I highly recommend if you are thinking of
doing virtual partitioning, you get on 7.1 in the hosting partition, and get
this latest PTF installed on your system.
