In addition, SQL tables have advantages in terms of performance, and indexes, as well. Also, I think there is data validation that has changed and is more likely to prevent input errors.

http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg246393.pdf is a book on database modernization. It presents some of the pros and cons. It's worth a read. Birgitta Hauser, who contributes to these lists, is one of the authors. And Daniel Cruikshank, who has some things at Centerfield Technology's site, as well as other presentation on database performance - http://www.centerfieldtechnology.com/events.asp will take you to a list on the left of interest here.
