As far as save/restore media is concerned, I expect both systems to be on the network concurrently, so save restore media will likely be save files. May not be doing a Save 21 to get that, but I can replicate it using the appropriate combination of savXXX commands.

Exactly right.  You can save a little time with a SAVE 23 instead of a
21 (you don't need the O/S bits after all.)

You might run into a few things that need fixing when coming from this
far back for example TCP/IP configs are stored in a bit different place
than they were in V4R3. So you might need to re-enter some things there.

As Pete says this process seems odd but the sequence is correct and the
net of it is the most effective method for 'far back' upgrades.

Often the 'fun part' is obtaining compatible save/restore media!

Larry Bolhuis and I do these all the time, and for those not familiar with this process it looks funny/weird, but it works.

I upgraded yesterday a model 170 running V5R3 to a Power6 box, and just like your issue the 170 couldn’t go to V5R4 and the Power6 machine couldn’t go to V5R3.  I loaded just the LIC at 6.1.1 and IBM i at 6.1, and then took the 5.3 GO SAVE 21, and restored the User profiles, Restored the configuration objects, Restored the *NONSYS, then restored the DLO, restored the IFS, and then ran a RSTAUT.  Now, I had a machine with 6.1 OS, but all the LPPs were at 5.3. If I did a GO LICPGM, I would see most stuff at backlevel. I then ran an UPDSYSINF to restore all the Network attributes, System Values, Edit descriptions, etc.  Then I upgraded all the LPPs to 6.1, loaded the 6.1 PTFs, and then did my conversions (v5R3 to V5R4 *FILE, *USRQ, *DTAQ, and my STROBJCVN on the programs).

All my QUSRSYS info was there, and everything worked.

I would use the same process, perhaps get that model 600 up to the latest release that it can go to, and then do the above.

So Pete, other than talking to ISV's.  Any tips for going from v4r3 to
7.1.  From a model 600 to a model 720?

I plan to do a full reinstall of all IBM and third party software, then
save and restore custom libraries, user information and security
information.  Probably run side by side for a bit and give them time to
shake out any issues that crop up since I expect that there will be a few.

You have to go to at least 6.1 of the OS, with 6.1.1 of the SLIC.  While
the
upgrade from 6.1 to 7.1 is extremely easy compared to 5.4 to 6.1 (the
upgrade is easy, its the preparation with ANZOBJCVN that makes it a
little
difficult).  Let me give you a few things you should have investigated
before you decide, there are others and that is why you read the memo to
users, and upgrade/installation guide.  You will need to determine if you
are running WAS 6.0, then you have to upgrade first to WAS 6.1 to get to
IBM
i 7.1, or you stay with WAS 6.0 and go with IBM i 6.1.  If you are running
Domino which version are you running as some work with 6.1 and 7.1, others
just work with 5.4, or with just 6.1.  Do you use JAVA, which JDK are you
using?  There are different JDKs with each release of IBM i, and some JDKs
aren't supported at 7.1, but were there at 6.1 and/or 5.4.

In addition to knowing "what questions should I be asking my resellers",
have you done your homework to know the dependencies that each release
requires, and how those interact with your current environment?  You just
don't go to a release because someone on this list recommends it, as they
have done their homework for their environment and made sure they checked
out the issues for their environment, but not yours.  This isn't a
negative
comment on you Cole, this is a comment to everyone that says they are on
7.1
and you should be there as well.  Yes, I agree that everyone *should* be
on
the latest release, but only after you have checked the requirements,
constraints, and other issues that all the releases have within them.
Homework and preparation are the key to insure that your upgrade goes
smoothly.

IBM has asked me to join them on Tuesday February 8th at
2:00pm EST
in creating a webinar which discusses moving up to Power7 and IBM i 7.1 It
will have Guy Paradise, WW Marketing Manager IBM i, Mark Olson WW Product
manager Power System (Mr. Hardware), Steve Will Chief Architect IBM i, and
myself (I have probably done more IBM i upgrades than anyone else in the
world).  Here is the link for the webinar if you are interested.

We're in the process of looking at a new Power 7.  The question we have is
which
OS to go to.  We're at V5R4M0, do we go to 6.1 or make the leap to 7.1?

Also what questions should we be asking our reseller?
