You will want to use the CHGVAR command
Example would be:
DCL VAR(&1) TYPE(*DEC) LEN(5)
DCL VAR(&2) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(5)

CHGVAR VAR(&1) VALUE(&2)

This should work in most cases.
