This thread seems to lack some possibly important historical background...

Telnet was one of the first TCP/IP applications available, when the Internet was first bursting onto the scene. So, it is no surprise that many other TCP based protocols (such as SMTP, etc.) were built in such a way that they could be easily "debugged" using Telnet.

Hence, anything you can do with Telnet, you can also do directly, by writing a TCP/IP sockets application.

Does that help, at least, conceptually?
