comparing SQL with RLA, there are some things only SQL could do, including using all data types, as400 supports. There are only few things RLA could do and SQL can't (it would be rather hard!), sequential processing, including positioning and going on sequential. To make a decision, in such a case I'm looking at two things: whats the mainstream and how are the future perspectives and both counts for SQL, its mainstream on all platforms and the perspective of RLA seems limited to me, IBM itself makes statements of direction since 10 years for SQL and against RLA and I'm remembered on discussions that Token Ring is better than Ethernet, 2 years before TR disappeared from the market, dumped by the inventor of the product (BTW: it was better in fact!°, but that was not the question).
BTW: there are better SQL solutions, than you mentioned in your last posting - my startegy: keep it simple!

Really, the discussion is now getting to be that you shouldn't use RLA
because you should only use one technique and that technique should be
SQL. It's not a particularly strong argument.
