... if the data has its origin in JDBC capable databases, you could retrieve it directly with embedded SQL in RPG, using my OpenSource Database Driver ArdGate, which is available at Source Forge. Its installed and ready for use in 1 hour and based on the high performance Bridge AppServer4RPG (open Source) for Java Calls from RPG without starting multiple JVMs.

Subject: Re: Getting data from PCs

I can understand you wanting to control the feed from the i. This allows
you to get the data when the processes on the i are ready. There are
multiple ways.

The easiest suggestion is to do the following:
Read the pc names from a file. For each pc:
MD '/QNTC/ThePC'
MONMSG CPFA0A0 /* Already exists. They get cleared at IPL time */
/ * If you're real good, clear the above message from your joblog to avoid
clutter */
CPY '/QNTC/ThePC/directory/file' TOOBJ('/SomeIFSDirectory/someFile')
process accordingly
repeat for next pc

Another option would be to use System i Access for Windows to use the
'remote command' capability. This is especially useful if there are
processes on the pc which are necessary first to glean the data. We've
used this for a visual basic script to extract data from Access and put
into a CSV to import on to the i. You have to turn on the remote command
service on each pc and use a userid/password that is on the i and in your
pc domain.

You could load a ftp server on each pc and use ftp commands to get the
data from the pc to the i. Perhaps this will also allow the remote
command capability to extract data first if necessary.

You could use a JDBC connection from your i into SQL Server on each pc.
We've also done that using RPG and Java on the i to use JDBC to
communicate with SQL Server. About a bazillion magazine articles have
been written on this over the last decade or longer.
