Stateful packet inspection was certainly at the top of the list.

Yes I'd agree that it's still "packet filtering". After all no
matter how the decision is made, the end result is that a packet is
allowed or denied.

My point is simply that the basic packet filtering available in IBM i
doesn't constitute a "firewall" as the term is generally understood to
mean now-a-days.

Can you explain this further?   Are you referring to stateful packet
inspection?  I'd still call that packet filtering, though.

To me, "packet filter" is a type of firewall -- and time has proven it
to be superior to the alternative types, IMHO.   So why is "packet
filter" inaccurate today?
