RE: Automating communications to/from external platform

If there is no API, I have a telnet client that can communicate with external devices that I wrote specifically for talking to telecom equipment. There are a lot of big players in the telecom industry that don't expose their equipment in a more modern way.

I'm hoping to automate what is currently done through a PC
Telnet-to-CS1500 interactive session. (CS 1500 is a telecom switch).
My plan is to have an RPG program that sends text-string instructions
from the i to the CS 1500 via VPN tunnel. My program will monitor for
and act on any response from the CS 1500 (no human interaction involved
-- as in, "Look, Ma! No hands!).
My challenge is that I am not at all familiar with the technologies for
communicating from the i to/from another (in this case, non-IBM) device.
Is TELNET appropriate here, or does that require an interactive 5250
session?
The i is at 6.1
